On the way to Normandy 2 - Bayeux/Caen

Cathedral of Caen

5/22 - 8:30-18:30 - D-DAY tour , Bayeux -

point du hoc
rotating base for a canon

only concretes left....

Never really thought of World War 2 as a theme for tourism. This is one of those unforgetable trips in my life. To be able to see where liberation begins and how soldiers fought for their believes make me realised how grateful we are ( living in a peaceful country ). Without their sacrifices, how would today's world look like? We humans search for freedom infinitely. But when we have it do we treasure it? Why war and not love/peace? Many many questions rushed out from my head all day long but I couldn't really find the ultimate answer. One thing for sure, our world could be worse so stop complaining but do something instead to make it better.

Our day tour was to visit some of the most notable places such as Point du Hoc, Omaha beach, American Cemetery, Pegasus Bridge and etc. Although there are even more sights and every little area has its own story to tell about the war, we chose to join the tour for one day only ( none of us are military nor history freaks....). That is also why I decided to hire a guide so atleast we know more about what really happened when all we can see now are rubbles here and there. Thanks to our guide, we were able to notice some old German bunkers and batteries along the roads ( places that we will surely miss on our own ). We were also in luck to be able to visit the interior of a German bunker and to learn about their military engineering. One big bonus for joining the d-day tour is to relax in the van ( no need to drive on our own with a tomtom! ).

Pegasus Bridge

5/22 - 20:00 - 22:00 - Caen

Caen city center

Caen, the capital of Basse-Normandie was our next stop. The one and only interesting site is the Château de Caen, a castle built by William the Conqueror. We took a stroll around the front gate and realised it was too late to go inside. Anyway, getting enough sleep was more important so everyone agreeded to head back to hotel........

off topic: It's actually surprising that we haven't had much luck finding GOOD food...... everyone was desperately hoping for some decent meal.... and so we end up searching for Buffalo Grill again....

to be continue.....
